This may well change as students gain more proficiency and self-sufficiency in the language. I am finding, though, that the lessons pretty much each fit into a 2-hour window, and there’s not much extra time for other activities. So far, so good, as far as my intended pacing goes. Thus far, I’ve planned on teaching half of Curso de Español Para Extranjeros each semester, and if there is a 2nd level of Spanish offered at the high school, I’ll move on to the second book. I intend to email recommended videos to the class as the semester goes on. The CD allows them to do so, and I’m also referring them to online sources (You Tube videos) for additional practice. Among other topics, I’ve suggested to my beginning students that they dedicate a lot of time to drilling themselves on the Spanish alphabet from the first unit, as well as the numbers in the second unit, so as to not find themselves lost as the material commences becoming increasingly complex as time goes on. My two classes are huge (42 and 44 students, respectively)! Thus, I needed a resource that allows me to cover a lot of material, for a large student audience, in a weekly 2-hour period. The textbook comes with a CD, and students are thus able to preview and review lessons. Spanish terms are rendered into: English, German, French and Portuguese. After all, if you can’t pronounce Spanish sounds, you can pretty much write off speaking or reading aloud for the remainder of your Spanish-learning and Spanish-speaking career!Īs an aid to the students, the book includes a multilingual glossary, organized by chapters. As far as pacing goes, I planned-and was able to-spend 2 weeks on the first lesson, which has some foundational material, such as the Spanish alphabet, that beginning students need to grasp as “building blocks” for future studies. I’ve found the textbook, its accompanying CDs and its Teachers Guide to be simply phenomenal in helping me plan and execute lessons. Curso de Español Para Extranjeros is aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. This semester (Fall 2017), I’ve started using this amazing book as the textbook in 2 Spanish classes that I’m teaching at a girls high school in Taipei, Taiwan.
